Who would you become if the world was watching?

Welcome to my website. As a professional Author, I aim to create a better understanding of the world and our place in it — a mission which has cast me in many different roles: author, artist, and creative innovator. Read some of my work below, book me for appearances, and see what is coming soon!

Snapshots: Say Cheese! The World is Watching

Winner of the Bronze 2019 Living Now Award

Even as a young child I was always conjuring up stories and filling them with colorful characters, sharing them with anyone and everyone who would listen. Since then, I’ve progressed quite a bit to formulating longer and more complex stories and sharing them with much larger audiences. As a professional storyteller, I’m adept at using my imaginative thinking and creative flair to bring my stories to life in engaging and entertaining ways.

Given my background of growing up in a close knit suburb and my family’s legacy, there is significant familial and social pressure to fit the mold. What would happen if I didn’t? What if I was a lesbian? Did I conform? Become unseen? Rebel? To what lengths does one go to be accepted into the fold?
Snapshots explores a more intimate legacy, one that is relatable to most people. It explores the legacy parents leave with her daughter implicitly and explicitly. If a daughter models what she sees, what happens when the model is dysfunctional? Hypocritical? Yet expecting success and social assimilation? Snapshots describes what daughters saw at home conflict with the desire to break free of cultural expectations.
Finally, Snapshots culminates into self acceptance. It expresses a victory over social pressure yet establishes a peace through what links people  together: our ability to persevere, our ability to parent, our ability to be culturally engaged with out sacrificing ourselves.

What People Are Saying

Reviews

All authors love feedback.  I am no different.  Please read what independent evaluators are saying about my work.

Independent Book Review

Cara Cilento isn’t playing any games with her debut publication Snapshots: Say Cheese! The World is Watching. She uses both poetry and prose to tell provocative stories about familial issues, race, homosexuality, and eventually, self-acceptance. Despite being shown that the world is against her, she’s willing to thrust her voice into the conversation
with this new book in order to inspire change and motivate others to do the same.

Independent Book Review

This book takes the reader on a full-circle journey, starting from younger years and
flowing right into adult and motherhood. In this voyage, the persona covers so many subjects under the umbrella of life that anyone reading can find at least one thing to relate to. I can see gifting this book to a variety of people from all different lifestyles.

Self Publishing Review

"An emotive collection. The imagery in each leaps from the page, flavored by the author's unapologetic attitude - filled with pathos, but also confidence. Pushed by her family to “assimilate,” speech therapist Cilento has found her place within and outside the mainstream, eloquently sharing her struggles and triumphs through her clear poetic gifts."
